Language Placement Instructions for Incoming First-Year Students

Learning another language is part of being a global citizen of the 21 st century. Language study opens doors professionally and personally, as you gain the ability to negotiate situations in other cultures and increase your ability to communicate with people on their own terms and see the world through their eyes. For these reasons (and more), Susquehanna’s Central Curriculum requires that all students attain a proficiency level equal to two semesters’ study of a language other than English.

We want to make sure you are placed in the right language class at SU so you can get the most out of this opportunity. Please read the following information carefully before proceeding.

If you have completed less than 3 years of a language and indicated an interest in studying that language on your registration worksheet, you will automatically be given a 101 placement. Contact the Registrar’s Office to request a 101 placement if you are unsure which language you selected on your registration sheet. If you have taken the equivalent of 1-2 years of a language, you may still take a placement assessment if you feel you could place above the 101 level.

You are required to take a language placement assessment if you have completed the equivalent of three or more years of a language in high school and want to continue studying it at Susquehanna.

Language placements are valid for ONLY 2 years! After that time you will have to retake the placement assessment. So, be sure to sign up for your language class sooner rather than later!
