Official Start of the Spring Semester
Held at the start of the spring semester, Winter Convocation welcomes and celebrates it’s students back to campus. The event also celebrates the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by featuring a speaker or performance that ties the legacy of the civil rights movement to current events.
Organized by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Winter Convocation prominently features Susquehanna’s students, who often provide music during the event.

Lift Every Voice and Sing was publicly performed first as a poem during a celebration of President Lincoln’s birthday in 1900, by hundreds of African American schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School in Florida. Later set to music as an uplifting spiritual, it became a way for African Americans to express their patriotism and hope for the future.
Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
